American music sits in my bones and flows through my veins but rarely tells my story. I’m adding to a longstanding tradition of artists doing the work to see, hear, honor, and humanize ourselves and others within a broader context that wasn’t built for us.
About
I was born in Shanghai, China as 张瀚曾 and later given my American legal name Joseph Han-Zeng Chang. The last character of my Chinese name is the same character as the surname of my great uncle, Andrew Tseng (曾恩榮), who was a Chinese painter, poet, and healer. He never had biological children but loved me as his grandchild. My parents promised him that their second child would carry his last name, but that child never came. As such, I offer my artist self as his descendent and create under the name Joseph Tseng.
